Two hours later Joeâs group had examined each room and decided to take some of the crackers, flour, and pasta back with them. Earl went straight to the gunroom with Cole in tow. While the others looked over the bunker, Earl and Cole examined the ammunition and gun parts.
Joe led the group back to the armory, and they were astounded at the cache of ammo in the shelves and pallets. Joe knew the times had changed because young women and their mothers were genuinely excited about the bullets more than they would have been a year ago about new clothes or iPhones.
âEarl, what have you learned?â Joe asked.
Earl turned around from his work on the bench with a wicked looking gun in his hands. It had a short snout for a barrel and a long magazine.
âPeople, we have assembled three of these M3 Sub Machine Guns, which are affectionately called grease guns by the soldiers that used them during WWII. They were meant as a cheap replacement for the Thompson Sub Machine Gun, which cost ten times as much to make and required true craftsmen and gunsmiths to manufacture. These workhorses were stamped from sheet steel and built on an assembly line.
They arenât good for engaging the enemy at 100 yards but from fifty yards in deliver massive firepower. The bastards are heavy but are dependable. I would have our guards carry one along with one of the Colt M1911A1s. These are devastating close up. The magazines hold 30 .45 ACP rounds and pack a serious punch. The downside is that they kick like a mule and the barrel tends to rise on fully automatic if you fire more than a few shots,â Earl said.
âHow many can you put together from these parts?â Jane asked.
âCole is matching up parts now. Oh, by the way, there arenât many parts in this baby,â Earl exclaimed.
âI have matched up enough sets to assemble ten more in addition to the three Earl has already assembled,â Cole said.
âWhat about the M1911A1s?â Dan asked.
âIâve assembled a dozen and think there could be enough for twenty more,â Earl said.
âThat is many more guns than we need,â Jane said.
âOh, no! I disagree. The guns you all have on your shoulders and hips shoot 5.56, 9mm, and 12 Gauge rounds. Do you see any here? No, not a one. Each of you only has about a hundred rounds of 5.56 for each AR and less than that for the 9mm pistols. We have another five to six thousand 5.56 rounds in the tuna cans. Iâll bet 90 percent of our 12 Gauge rounds are birdshot and not much good in a fight. We need to save our other ammunition and begin to use up this ammunition. We even need to trade some of these for the other rounds,â Earl enthusiastically preached to the others.
Joe explained his position on the topic. âWe will first arm our guards with the M3 and 1911A1s and give each of us at least one of the weapons.
